For The Shining Place, I was eager to explore music and poetry by twentieth- and twenty-first-century women artists that spoke of a desire to expand the self, either through mining the interiority of one’s life or seeking new adventures in the larger world.
With a generous Graduate Award from The Presser Foundation, I will travel to Berlin, Germany from mid-March to early June 2022. I plan to mine Le Beau’s public archives at three German state libraries for Le Beau’s unpublished Lieder manuscripts and other primary source material relevant to the compositional and performance practice of her Lieder.
"Sauvez-moi de l'amour" (Save me from love) explores the complexities of love and human relationships through musical works spanning the Medieval era until today. It is also the final recital of my DMA degree, and I am excited to collaborate with Julie Bosworth (voice), Hui-Chuan Chen (piano), Alix Evans (medieval harp), Bonnie Lander (voice), and Claire Galloway Weber (voice).
This DMA lecture recital will provide an overview of the published Lieder opuses of Romantic-era composer Luise Adolpha Le Beau (1850-1927). With the support of a Presser Graduate Award, this research project began over a year ago, as I undertook archival research to explore Le Beau's relationship to song in Berlin, Karlsruhe, and Baden-Baden from March to June 2022. In collaboration with Hui-Chuan Chen (piano), we will perform excerpts from Le Beau's published song repertoire, and I will discuss the socio-cultural, historical, and musical elements of Le Beau's Lieder oeuvre.
